Vehicle Listing Description
Hemmings Motor News recently featured the 1980 Trans Am Pace Car in the April 2007 edition, touting the car as model that actually delivers on Pontiacs "European Division", with a 4.9L Turbo (cutting edge stuff in 1980), a more subdued screaming chicken color scheme (european chicken), digital, hood mounted boost gauge, and by the way- this car actually handles well. When new, the automotive press compared the handling prowess of the car to that of the Corvette (which cost twice as much), hype? No. In their modern day driving review, HMN notes "Cornerning melodies remained sharp and flat, with no slack...and no sloppy leaning turns." "The driving borders on comtemporary..." So why am I pointing this out? Well, people collect cars they fondly remember and were significant performers or innovators of their time. Trans Am outsold Corvette nearly two to one back in the late 70's, early 80's. The reason is simple and examplified in this limited edition, T-top coupe, the same power and handling at half the price as a full-on "Sports Car". Isn't that what EVERY muscle car was trying to be?

1980 Trans Am Indy Pace Car Replica Specific equipment includes:

4.9L Turbocharged V8 Engine, 3-Speed Automatic Transmission, Positraction rear axle with 3.08:1 axle ratio, WS6 Performance Handling Package with 4-wheel disc brakes, Hatch roof, Specific Oyster interior with Hobnail Cloth inserts in Doeskin Vinyl with Firebird logo embridered into rear seat back, special oyster luxury weight carpet, Air conditioning, Red lit gages, power windows, power door locks, power antenna, white exterior color with gray accents, unique hood decal, turbo boost gauge, white painted turbo cast aluminum wheels, leather stitched formula steering wheel with unique horn button, pin striping, custom interior door trim panels with Firebird logo embroidered into each upper panel, tilt steering wheel, delay wipers, and cruise control.

This particular example is fresh off of its Gold Bowtie and "Best in Class" Win, featured as part of the Indy 500 display two weeks ago at Chevy VetteFest, the world's largest indoor Chevy and Corvette Show. She scoring 996 points out of 1000. Two points were deducted for a rub that removed some the stripe work on the rear driver's side near the wheel well (which is has already been repaired), and two more points for a blemish on the seat one of the seatbelt clips. That is the worst of it. Chevy VetteFest Judges value originality, the engine bay is in untouched driver condition and the interior is also unrestored. She shows very well inside for a 75,000 mile car. She has a recent quality repaint with a full compliment of brand new Indianapolis Edition graphis, Euro-Chicken included.

I observed the car as one someone was interested in driving, found that everything worked, started and drove fine, wheels are original turbo style, they show normal road wear. The meats are fresh radials. T-Top and door seals appear to be in good condition. I didn't get the water hose out and leak test them, I think the event staff and McCormick Place would have frowned on that. The trunk lid does the normal second-gen droop under the wieght of the factory installed big spoiler. All the glass, marker lenses and lights appear to be in very good condition. The underside is factory stock, shocks, seemed dry, slight fluid residue on engine and trans, no signs of active leaking or seepage, just in need of good a detail.

Documentation includes original owners manual, full PHS Documentation, reproduction window sticker, and a warranty book with the original owner's name and selling dealership on it. Copies are available upon request.

Less than 10% of total Trans Am production, only 5,700, were Indianapolis Editions. Only the Indy cars got the cutting edge 4.9L Turbo. So, if you are a fan of Second Generation Firebirds. This one belongs in your collection.
